Cost of Living

Newham Cost of Living Response

The current cost of living crisis is having a deep impact on Newham’s residents andit is likely to have implications for years to come. The acute challenge of the moment is driven by generationally high inflation of essentials such as domestic energy and food; this exacerbates a chronic challenge driven by the squeeze on living standards for those towards the bottom and middle of the income distribution for many years.

Given the cumulative impact on Newham’s residents, there is a need to come together as a community and a place to ensure that we’re using our collective levers as effectively as possible. This is in order to support the flow of income into Newham’s households and to mitigate the impacts of poverty and low income on people of all ages.

Staying well and healthy this winter

A few simple actions can help improve our chances of staying well and healthy this winter. Also, it’s always good to know that there’s lots of free advice and help available for living costs.

A new leaflet we’ve produced, called ‘Help with living costs and staying well and healthy this winter’, has a whole range of tips and contact details – headed by Our Newham Money, who are the first port of call for help if you’re not able to afford heating, food or other essentials.

Energy Usage Advice Guide

Worried about energy usage in your home? We’ve produced a handy guide to saving energy and keeping warm, as well as where to get help and advice on your gas and electricity bills. For instance, did you know that you can save around £80 a year by unplugging your TV and computers and not leaving them on standby mode?

‍
Landlord compliance with the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard

Our Energy Efficiency Team is running five drop-in sessions to give landlords an opportunity to find out about what the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard means for their properties and to ask any specific questions they may have. The team will also be able to provide more details on grants and support available. For details of the drop-in sessions as well as a range of advice, see the leaflet we have specially produced for landlords.

Newham Warm Haven grants programme 2022/23

As part of our four-pronged response, Newham has launched the Newham Warm Havens Programme. The ‘Warm Havens’ Programme is working with partners of the Council to keep spaces and places open for longer including in libraries, community buildings and other places.

To action this, small grants of up to ÂŁ500 are available to voluntary/community or faith organisations as well as informal local community groups who want to support residents who are facing difficulties.
