Pharmacy First Scheme - Get NHS Treatment Without Seeing GP

Under the Pharmacy First Scheme, you can now get help and treatment for common conditions directly from your local community pharmacy—without needing to book a GP appointment.

What is Pharmacy First?

Pharmacy First is a free NHS service that allows trained pharmacists to assess and treat a range of minor health conditions. This helps you access care more quickly and helps GP practices focus on patients with more complex needs.

Conditions Treated Under Pharmacy First:

You can visit a participating pharmacy for advice and treatment (including prescription medications, if needed) for the following conditions:

  • Earache (aged 1 to 17)
  • Impetigo (a skin infection)
  • Infected insect bites
  • Shingles
  • Sinusitis
  • Sore throat
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women aged 16–64

Note: Not all pharmacies offer this service. Please check with your local pharmacy before visiting.

How It Works:
  1. Walk in or contact your local pharmacy (some offer phone consultations).
  2. A trained pharmacist will assess your symptoms.
  3. If appropriate, the pharmacist can offer advice, treatment, or prescription medication—all NHS-funded.
  4. If your condition is more serious, the pharmacist will refer you to a GP or other healthcare professional.
Benefits of Using Pharmacy First:
  • No appointment needed
  • Quick access to treatment
  • Convenient locations and extended hours
  • Free NHS service
